In today's Featured Friday, we're thrilled to welcome multiple award-winning author and cover artist, L.C. Chase! L.C. gives us a peek into how she got started and more...

How did you get started in the publishing industry?

As an author, I blame it all on my Mom. ;-) One day totally out of the blue, she said, “You should write a book.” It took a long time from there, but after some life changes I decided to get serious about writing and joined a critique group I’d found through the eHarlequin writer boards. There were six of us and we inspired and motivated each other. We all ended up published. ☺ As an artist, one of my favorite authors held a contest to redo the cover for one of her books. I entered and won! From there, other authors asked me to design their covers as well, which eventually led to becoming an art director at one publishing house, and regular designer at another.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?

The editor at a pitch session with Kensington rejected my story, which doesn’t start off sounding like good advice is about to follow. ;-) At the end he said, “I’m only one editor at one publisher.” That really stuck with me. So he rejected it, no big. He’s just one guy at one pub. Another editor at another press might love it, which turned out to be the case. My first book was published later that year with a different publisher.

What’s your favorite under-appreciated work?

Pulling Leather. I think it’s appreciated when people read it, but the main character wasn’t very likable in the first book of the series. Scott ended up being one of my favorite characters to write because he was such a challenge to bring around.

Where do you go to escape?

The trails! I love being outdoors. Running, hiking, or horseback riding the trails is some of my most favorite things. I always return feeling relaxed and energized, and any problems I’d had usually manage to sort themselves out. It’s great for plotting books too. ;-)

What’s something you’ve tried that you’ll never, ever try again?

Surfing! My brother is a big surfer and tried to teach me, once upon a time. It was all good until a wave smacked the board back, hitting my jaw hard enough to rattle my brains. I decided the boogie boards were safer after that. ;-)
